Editions

As part of their research, Caro has made editions and/or reconstructed items of early music sources, particularly sources from exiled English convents. All editions feature accompanying critical commentary and/or bibliographies. Below are some samples.

The English Augustinian convent in Bruges

Fauxbourdon Mass (Anonymous, c.1732), Kyrie & Gloria

Reconstruction from fragments of a mass in antiphonals from the English Augustinian convent in Bruges, marked ‘in Fauxbourdon’.

Magnificat (Anonymous, c.1675-1685)

Reconstruction for upper voice and continuo from a vocal part for a setting in alternatim in a schoolbook used by two schoolgirls at the English Benedictine convent in Pontoise.

O Salutaris Hostia (Anonymous, c.1675-1685)

Virtually identical in style to Magnificat. Instrumental part partially copied alongside vocal part.

Quid Mihi, O Bone Jesu?

For two violins, continuo, and voice. In a manuscript likely compiled and/or used at St Monica’s English Augustinian convent, Leuven.

Inter Tumultuantis Saeculi (Anonymous, 1685)

High voice, treble instrument, continuo. Composed for Dame Cecilia (née Catherine) Tasburgh (b. 1649), choir nun at the English Benedictine convent in Ghent, 1685. Marian motet.

Hail, Basilinda! (Anonymus, 1686)

High voice, continuo. ‘Made’ for Dame Ignatia (née Susan) Warner (1662-1711), choir nun at the English Benedictine convent in Dunkirk.

Dextro Speco Ramito (Anonymous, c.1680s-1700s?)

High voice, continuo. Neo-Latin/Italian text, crucifixion meditation.
